UFC 116 Round By Round: “Ooops” and Blunders at The Clash Of The Giants

Well my MMA friends, finally, the fight we’ve all been waiting for is minutes away from happening.

The clash between the two most intimidating, physically impressive Heavyweights in the UFC today is about to take place.

After nearly eight months of waiting, and a lot of speculation after Brock Lesnar’s run-ins with diverticulitis, we finally get to see these two giants of the Octagon face each other in what I’m sure will be an awesome bout.

Also, preceeding what is consideed to be the biggest heavyweight matchup in UFC history (so far), an awesome fightcard including the co-main event between Yoshihiro Akiyama and Chris “The Crippler” Leben, who comes in to fight for the second time in two weeks, after defeating Aaron Simpson, and stepping in for Wanderlei Silva due to injury.

It will be a fun, thrill filled, exciting night for all UFC & MMA Fans.

But I’m not only here to give you the updates on how the event is going, I’m also here to give you all the “oops”, bloopers, and blunders in general, that sometime take place in any live event, and especially live broadcastings.

So sit tight, and keep updating this article, for I’m sure a lot of fun stuff will pop up.

Here we go.

UFC 116 Weigh-Ins Live on Spike (Friday, July 2nd, 2010)

It was fun to watch the weigh-ins live on Spike rather than on the computer, and not having to deal with the buffering issues we’ve all come to hate.

Everything went smoohtly until…

After Lesnar and Carwin step in and out of the weigh-in, Joe Rogan interviews both fighters.  Carwin comes first, with a simple and relaxed answer to Joe’s questions.  Brock is then asked what does he think about Carwin coming into this fight, Brock says “I’m ready to fight, that’s all I have to say.” Rogan ends the interview, shakes Lesnar’s hand, and goes on to wipe his hand on his own shirt . interesting.

Either Brock was really nervous and his hands were all sweaty and greasy, or Joe has OCD and has to wash or wipe after shaking hands.  who knows.

The Prelims on Spike TV

Ricardi Romero vs Seth Petruzelli

This should be a good fight… just started… but the UFC commentators and Bruce Buffer should sit and finally figure out how they will pronounce Seth’s last name.  Petruzelli has been named “The Guy who Single-Handedly Killed Elite XC” by Rogan.

After a very active first round where Seth looked to have the upper hand, Ricardo Romero takes the fight with an  armbar.

Both fighter’s appear to have questionable cardio and conditioning, still it was a good fight.

Brendan Schaub vs Chris Tuchscherer

Brendan knocks down Tuchscherer a little bit over a minute into the first round.  Referee Herb Dean stops the action.  Brendan Schaub wins by TKO.

Gerald Harris vs Dave Branch

After two uneventful rounds, Gerald Harris slams Dave Branch into the matt (making me remember the days when Rampage used to powerslam fighters all around the Pride Ring)

Gerald Harris wins by KO due to bodyslam.

In an interview with Joe Rogan, UFC president Dana White, says the betting line is dead-even.  also said Lesnar was a heavy favoured when the betting lines opened but that’s all changed now.

On to the PPV.

The PPV Event

The transmitions starts with commentators Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan highlighting the upcoming fights with a roaring crowd as background.  as soon as the image of Brock Lesnar is shown in the giant screens, the booing of the crowd is evidence of Lesnar being a polarizing figured, as commented by the UFC commentators.

Kurt Pellegrino vs George Sotiropoulos

Pretty good fight.  Very entertaining exchanges both in the stand-up and on the ground.

George Sotiropoulos wins by UD.

Krzysztof Soszynski vs Stephan Bonnar

In the pre-fight interview videos, Stephan Bonnar seems to have somewhat of a stepthroat.  I hope he’s not comming into this fight with a cold.

This guys picked this fight uo right where they left it the first time… call everyone… It’s a scrap.. FIGHT… FIGHT… FIGHT…

Bonnar already bleeding under both eyes.  Truly a back and forth war.

Bonnar knock Soszynski down with a knee and finishes him with a hundred and fifty punches to the side of the head.

Bonnar wins by TKO.

Talking to Joe Rogan, an emotional Stephan Bonnar takes the mic and says:

“I have spilled pints and pints of blood just for you guys, but I’m thoroughly happy with it.  I know I’m sick in the head, I need help, but I love you guys, and I love you Joe Rogan.”

Chris Lytle vs Matt Brown

Very entertaining fight…

Matt Brown had Lytle in a deep Darse Choke in the first round but Lytle popped out…

In the second round, after getting the mount, Lytle puts Brown on a Triangle Mount and ends it with a straight armbar.

Chris Lytle wins by submission due to straight armbar.

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Chris Leben

Chris Leben comes into this fight just after defeating Aaron Simpson two weeks ago.  Let’s just hope taking this fight doesn’t turn into one of the blunders of this event.

I don’t know how many of you will agree, over here everyone agrees with me.  Akiyama’s walkout music will come down as the worst choice ever for a walkout song.  certainly, Andrea Bocelli’s music doesn’t mix well with MMA.

After the end of the second round, I have it one round each so far.  So far, this is a candidate for fight of the night… we are all hanging off the edge of the seat.  Awesome exchanges.

CHRIS LEBEN WINS BY TRIANGLE CHOKE… THIS HAS TO BE FIGHT OF THE NIGHT.

Joe Rogans interviews Akiyama, it looks like he is going to switch the mic from his right hand to his left hand to shakes Akiyama’s hand, but decides otherwise…

After seeing him wipe his hand right on his own shirt after he shook hands with Lesnar at the weigh-ins… It really seems Rogan might have an issue with shaking hands… OCD anyone?… lol

In comes the Main Event…

Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin

You can feel the electricity surge in the air. Shane Carwin walks out completely calmed and to a huge crowd reaction, Lesnar walks out to Metallica’s Enter Sandman, modest crowd reaction but no booing.

Damm It!!! I’ve never been so nervous before a fight… Good thing it’s not me facing any of these two freaks of nature.

in a more personal note, both Bruce Buffer’s and Joe Rogan’s voices get annoying after a while.

INCREDIBLE START… Shane Carwin stopped all take down attempts by Lesnar.. knocks Lesnar down and pounds away… razor close to being stopped.

Lesnar is bloddied up.

Second round… Lesnar gets the take down… and incredibly… pulls an arm triangle on Carwin…

Folks.. believe it or not…

Lesnar wins by submission by way of arm triangle.

I take my hat off for Brock, my predictions almost became true, but in the end he pulled it off..

overall this has been a tremendous event, full of awesome, exciting fights.  a much better aftertaste than UFC112.  Kudos to all the winners, especially Chris Leben and Brock Lesnar.

Thank you all for reading…
